artist in residence 2024

there are some things in life that are just meant to be, like a piece of jigsaw puzzle finally finding its place. Applying and being accepted as the Artist in Residence at Cabilla Cornwall is one of them, such a joy and privilege to be embraced as part of the Cabilla family for a year of creativity in this magical place.

about the residency

Taking into consideration my life experiences, artistic passions, and of course, location, Cabilla's Artist in Residence project this year will focus upon full immersion in nature at key seasonal moments, away from the distractions and realities of life.

Through journaling, photography and artistic expression, I will reflect on how being in nature can affect body and mind. We hope to capture thought process, artistic flow, observations, subtleties in nature, combined with the physical and mental impact that immersion in an ancient temperate rainforest can have on a human being.

Cabilla - artist in residence

I've been restless my whole life, perhaps it's the gypsy stock nobody talks about, the Grandmother who looked like a Romany and thrived in a close community that sometimes rode bareback down the high street. I was always moving countries, houses, moving furniture in the home and filling the day with arrangements in a busy family life.

"GO OUT in the WOODS, GO OUT.
IF YOU DON'T GO OUT in the WOODS
NOTHING WILL EVER HAPPEN and
YOUR LIFE WILL NEVER BEGIN"

about cabilla

Cabilla exist to inspire everyone to experience the restorative powers of nature. They aim to create a place where their guests leave feeling happier than when they arrived, taking with them a renewed sense of clarity, balance and motivation.

the land

Cabilla Cornwall is home to a rare Temperate Rainforest and a diverse range of plant species, such as air-purifying lichens. It is also an official ancient oak woodland – defined as ‘an area of land where there has been a continuous cover of trees since 1600’, which currently makes up only 2% of British woodland.

restoration

Cabilla Cornwall steward 100 acres of temperate rainforest in their valley. They have been working for several years on The Thousand Year Project, a restoration programme which aims to triple the size of the forest and to return all of the species that it is missing.

thousand year trust

This is the first and only charity in the UK with the sole purpose of protecting, promoting and expanding celtic temperate rainforest environments wherever they are found.

“We’ve so far planted a little over 3,000 young saplings in the ground which makes up less than 10% of our eventual target.  Our plans are to re-establish 100,000 trees across the Cabilla valley but about half of these will be through natural regeneration.”
